Kiddush, Simchas and Events

This Shabbat is "Shabbat Sha'alvim," in celebration of Yeshivat Sha'alvim, Israel. Young Israel of West Rogers Park is proud to be taking part (see the attached flyer and Shabbat schedule or visit

Rabbi Mayer Simcha Stromer, who is an alumnus of Yeshivat Sha'alvim, will give the drashah in honor of Shabbat Sha'alvim.

Mazal tov to Rabbi & Miriam Prero on the occasion of the wedding of their niece in Baltimore.

Shiurim (classes)

Unless otherwise specified, shiurim and classes take place in the Arthur & Sally Dordek Library at Young Israel. All are welcome to participate in any of the shiurim.

  • Rabbi Prero's shiur on Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik's sefer, Al Hateshuva, On Repentence, will meet on Monday, February 19, at 8:15pm.

  • The Navi (Prophets) shiur will meet on Wednesday, February 21, at 8:30pm. The class is currently learning the book of Yehoshua (Joshua). Participants may use the Judaica Press (English) edition or the Mossad HaRav Kook (Hebrew) edition. For more information, please speak with Dr. Richard Chasman or Robbin Katzin.

Community Announcements

CAPS 2411 has alerted us that there was a series of commercial robberies and garage robberies in the area in the month of January-early February. Everyone is advised to:

  • Be aware of this crime and alert nearby businesses
  • Pay special attention to any suspicious persons/groups loitering in the area
  • Have and maintain a working surveillance system, both inside and outside your business
  • Call 911 immediately and provide a detailed description of the offender(s) including any vehicle description and license plate information

Sha'alvim Talks! offers a "TED Talks"-style Melaveh Malkah event this Motzaei Shabbat, February 17, at 8:00pm at Congregation K.I.N.S. A panel of Sha'alvim rabbinical alumni will present short, powerful talks on the topic, "Igniting the Flame: Finding Passion in Our Lives."

YU Torah Mitzion Kollel holds its 10th Annual Dinner Celebration on Sunday evening, February 25th at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O'Hare Hotel, appreciating the contributions of Rosh Kollel Rabbi Reuven and Dr. Nechama Brand.
